Healthcare public health is one of the three recognised domains of public health practice. In this unit you will explore international health systems and health services in the public health context to build a foundation upon which you will continue develop knowledge over the coming 3 years.  

Within the unit there will be opportunities to consider the management theories that underpin healthcare public health and how we develop, improve and maintain a high quality of service for communities and populations. We will explore the importance of other organisations and influences (both within and between countries) and consider their interaction with health systems. Throughout the unit you will examine different health systems and consider healthcare provision around the globe to identify inequalities
 

The unit aims to:  
 

• explore healthcare management and public health to understand how health systems influence the health of communities and populations. 
• define how management theory is used to develop, improve and maintain a high quality of service for communities and populations. 
• identify influences of other organisations such as NGOs both within and between countries and consider their interactions with health systems. 
• develop an awareness of global healthcare inequalities that exist today
   

We want you to get the most out of the unit and to do that we use a variety of trusted learning methods: 

• Whole group activities and discussions in seminars that may include smaller group working. 
• Learning from your peers, sharing work and providing feedback. 
• Online recordings or podcasts will be available to refer to following seminars.  
• Prior to seminars slides and materials will be available in the central learning environment. 
• Online tasks to complete. 
• Independent learning activities to include academic reading and preparation for seminars. 
• Ongoing guidance and support from the course unit lead.
   

Students will be able to:

• A1 Explain how individuals and organisations both within countries and outside interact with health systems.
• A2 Describe health systems and service provision to specific health topics, countries and inequalities.  
• A3 Review the management theories and techniques relevant to managing healthcare
   

Students will be able to:

• B1 Identify and evaluate the evidence required for healthcare management
• B2 Reflect on management principles and applications. 
• B3 Assess sources of evidence and relate them to the healthcare management of global systems and services.
   

Students will be able to:

• C1 Locate relevant and existing sources of evidence relevant to global healthcare systems and services.
• C2 Identify relevant data to inform understanding of healthcare systems.

Students will be able to:

• D1 Organise knowledge into coherent descriptions to enable discussions about healthcare provision and management. 
• D2 Communicate data and findings from research studies
   

Formative assessment task: 

• Peer feedback methods will be facilitated in class

Summative assessment task:

• A choice of written or recorded presentation of a SWOT analysis of a healthcare service (1000 words or 10 minutes, 90%)
• Annotated bibliography to support the SWOT (5%)
   

• Students will receive written and verbal feedback from peers and tutors during activities in taught sessions     
• Students will receive written feedback pn their summative assignment

For every 20 course unit credits we expect students to work for around 200 hours. This amount is only a guidance and individual study time will vary.
