Overview
Healthcare public health is one of the three recognised domains of public health practice. In this unit you will explore international health systems and health services in the public health context to build a foundation upon which you will continue develop knowledge over the coming 3 years.
Within the unit there will be opportunities to consider the management theories that underpin healthcare public health and how we develop, improve and maintain a high quality of service for communities and populations. We will explore the importance of other organisations and influences (both within and between countries) and consider their interaction with health systems. Throughout the unit you will examine different health systems and consider healthcare provision around the globe to identify inequalities
Aims
The unit aims to:
- explore healthcare management and public health to understand how health systems influence the health of communities and populations.
- define how management theory is used to develop, improve and maintain a high quality of service for communities and populations.
- identify influences of other organisations such as NGOs both within and between countries and consider their interactions with health systems.
- develop an awareness of global healthcare inequalities that exist today
Teaching and learning methods
We want you to get the most out of the unit and to do that we use a variety of trusted learning methods:
- Whole group activities and discussions in seminars that may include smaller group working.
- Learning from your peers, sharing work and providing feedback.
- Online recordings or podcasts will be available to refer to following seminars.
- Prior to seminars slides and materials will be available in the central learning environment.
- Online tasks to complete.
- Independent learning activities to include academic reading and preparation for seminars.
- Ongoing guidance and support from the course unit lead.

Formative assessment task:
- Peer feedback methods will be facilitated in class
Summative assessment task:
- A choice of written or recorded presentation of a SWOT analysis of a healthcare service (1000 words or 10 minutes, 90%)
- Annotated bibliography to support the SWOT (5%)
Feedback methods
- Students will receive written and verbal feedback from peers and tutors during activities in taught sessions
- Students will receive written feedback pn their summative assignment
