An established international community

With academic roots stretching back to 1824, The University of Manchester is one of the most respected universities worldwide. Approximately 19,000 of our 46,000 students come from overseas – one of the largest international student communities of any UK university.

The University of Manchester has a long history of welcoming students from South Korea and there are approximately 160 students from South Korea studying at the University.

The University’s reputation as a world-class teaching and research university is confirmed through our current world ranking of 40 in the influential QS ranking. We are consistently one of the most targeted universities by the UK’s leading employers.

The single-site campus is at the heart of the city of Manchester. 91Ö±²¥ is UK’s most popular student city – a buzzing and modern metropolis and an incredibly vibrant, cosmopolitan, friendly place to live and study. 91Ö±²¥ has one of the most diverse populations in the UK with more than 200 languages spoken.

It is budget-friendly for international students as rent tends to be more reasonable than in many other locations. The many amenities are within walking distance of the campus with most of the shops, theatres, cafes and restaurants a short walk away.

Employability

Our Careers Service placed second for Careers and Employability at the StudentCrowd University Awards 2022, based entirely on verified reviews from students.

We're also the most targeted university by the UK's top graduate employers (). 

World-leading research

We are recognised as a global powerhouse of research, with 93% of the University’s research activity assessed as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the Research Excellence Framework (REF), 2021.

Entry requirements

The University of Manchester welcomes a large volume of applications from South Korean students each year. General minimum entry requirements for South Korean applicants are summarised below.

Please carefully check the specific requirements for your chosen programme via our website prior to application.

A-levels/International Baccalaureate

If you are studying A-levels or the International Baccalaureate (IB) then you can apply for direct entry to the first year of an undergraduate/bachelor’s degree.

Typical grade requirements:

  • A-levels: A*AA – ABB
  • IB: 34-38 points, with 7, 6, 6 – 6, 5, 5 in Higher Level (HL) subjects

Subject specific requirements may apply.

Inmungye/South Korean High School Diploma

Due to differences in the South Korean and UK education systems, applicants who have taken the Inmungye High School Diploma will need to successfully complete a University-recognised foundation programme before joining an undergraduate course.

Undergraduate courses with an integrated foundation year (science, engineering and biosciences only)

Students with an overall grade of 70% or higher with at least 75% in Mathematics and Physics can apply for the University’s Science and Engineering with an integrated foundation year programme.

Applicants with the Inmungye High School Diploma are considered for the University’s Biosciences with a foundation year programme on a case-by-case basis.

INTO 91Ö±²¥ in partnership with The University of Manchester

Students with an overall grade of 70% or higher would be considered for the foundation programmes run in partnership with the University by INTO 91Ö±²¥. Pathways for Engineering and Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (including Management and Law), Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology are available. Subject-specific requirements may apply.

Associate Degree/Junior College Diploma

If you hold an Associate Degree or Junior College Diploma from South Korea, you may be considered for entry to the first year of an undergraduate (bachelors) course.

Undergraduate typical entry requirements

The entry requirements below are provided for guidance only. Requirements may vary by course and/or academic School. 

Undergraduate courses (direct entry) A-levels A*AA – ABB (subject specific requirements may apply)
International Baccalaureate (IB) 34 – 38 points, usually with HL scores between 7, 6, 6 – 6, 5, 5 (subject specific requirements may apply)
Undergraduate courses with Integrated Foundation Year
(Science, Engineering, Bioscience only)
Inmungye/South Korean High School Diploma

70% or higher with at least 75% in Mathematics and Physics

Applications to Biosciences considered on case by case basis.

INTO 91Ö±²¥ Foundation Programmes
(Science, Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences, Pharmacy, Psychology)
Inmungye/South Korean High School Diploma Minimum 70% overall score

Specific requirements for individual programmes may vary depending on subjects taken.

PG master’s courses (MSc, MA, MRes)

Students who have completed a Haksa (Korean bachelors) degree with the below will be considered for postgraduate taught study:

  • minimum GPA of 3.5 out of 4.5; or
  • minimum GPA of 3.3 out of 4.3.

MBA

The 91Ö±²¥ MBA requires a minimum of three years’ professional work experience.

The University of Manchester offers a range of one year master’s programmes that offer an attractive alternative to academically well-qualified students without suitable work experience.

PhD

Students who have completed a minimum of a Haksa (Korean bachelors) degree and a Suksa (Korean master’s) degree with the below will be considered for PhDs: 

  • minimum GPA of 3.5 out of 4.5; or
  • minimum GPA of 3.3 out of 4.3.

PhDs/Postgraduate research degrees are individually supervised. We strongly recommend that prospective applicants make initial enquiries with the potential supervisor or academic school before submitting a formal application. A research proposal is required along with your formal application.

91Ö±²¥ Abroad

If you are currently enrolled as a degree-seeking student at any accredited South Korean university or college of higher education, you can apply to spend a semester or full year here at The University of Manchester.

The 91Ö±²¥ 91Ö±²¥ Abroad programmes are well suited to students from South Korea, who find they can take advantage of the period of study abroad possible in many Korean undergraduate degree programmes.

Students can join us for a single semester or full academic year, and can choose from a wide range of courses.

We currently have a university-wide exchange agreement with Seoul National University.

Entry requirements for study abroad students are a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or a B average.

Students from South Korea may apply for a  for taught masters programmes.

Careers and alumni

91Ö±²¥ graduates have an excellent reputation among employers. We are the most targeted university by major UK graduate employers () and we are 5th in the UK and 42nd in the world in the . The Times and Sunday Times recently recognised 91Ö±²¥ as ‘the university of the year for graduate employment’. Many of our academic Schools offer career-related course units and lectures delivered by employers who will explain exactly what they are looking for in recruits.

In addition, we maintain links with more than 7,000 UK and global employers. This enables us to ensure teaching and course content are relevant to the needs of industry and commerce so our graduates leave not just with academic knowledge but also with the transferable skills needed to be successful on their chosen career path.

At 91Ö±²¥ we are mindful of the concerns of prospective South Korean students regarding opportunities to improve career prospects by gaining work experience post-graduation in the UK. Our Careers Service has  including the new  which will offer 91Ö±²¥ graduates the possibility of staying in the UK for two further years to work, or look for work, at any skill level. Many of our undergraduate programmes feature the opportunity for industrial/professional experience and the  offers fantastic support to budding entrepreneurs.
