Specified use
The Stuart Hall PhD Scholarship will be awarded to one student in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Manchester for a PhD starting in September 2025 and will cover fees and a stipend. The scholarship can be held in any of the 8 Departments within the School of Social Sciences. It is expected that the award-winner will be working in an interdisciplinary area of study focused on one of Stuart Hall's many areas of interest: cultural studies, race, ethnicity and inequalities.
Please note that existing postgraduate research students and applicants for distance learning PhD programmes cannot be considered for this funding.

Academic requirements
- Bachelor's (Honours) degree in a cognate subject at 2:1 or above (or overseas equivalent); and
- Master's degree in a relevant subject - with an overall average of 65% or above, a minimum mark of 65% in your dissertation and no mark below 55% (or overseas equivalent)

Stage 1:
You must submit a complete application for your chosen PhD programme by the deadline for your department (below). Section 9 of the application asks for your funding intentions. In this section, you should detail fully all the competitions in which you would like to be considered. Please add a funding source, and populate the fields as below:

Stage 2:

Your full online application must include;
- A 1,500 word  .Please state the word count on page 1 of the document.
- A copy of your Bachelor's and Master's academic transcript and certificate. If your Master's degree is pending, please provide an interim transcript.
- An up-to-date academic CV summarising your academic record, employment history, publications and highlighting experience demonstrating your research potential.
- The names of two academic referees, including one from your most recent institution. Your referees will be contacted directly via the Referee Portal following the submission of your application form.
- A certificate or evidence demonstrating your English language ability and proficiency.

Successful applicants for the studentship will work with the Stuart Hall Foundation, enhancing their career and research profile. They will engage with the Foundation's resources and networks, including the annual gathering of Stuart Hall Scholars and Fellows.
Founded in 2015, the Stuart Hall Foundation honours the legacy of Stuart Hall, a Jamaican-born British public intellectual and pioneer of Cultural Studies. The Foundation tackles issues of race, class, and intersecting inequalities through a commitment to public education.
