New Book Explores the AI Crisis in Higher Education
, Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning and Student Experience (Digital Education), explores the challenges and opportunities that AI presents for higher education in his new book, The AI Crisis in Higher Education: A Strategic Proposal.
, and the first Pressbooks open monograph published by the University of Manchester, the book examines the fast-evolving relationship between universities and language models. It argues that these tools have become commonplace without universities having fully adjusted to their presence, producing a multidimensional crisis of trust between staff and students, and a dilemma in which adapting to AI and integrating AI tend to undercut each other.
Reflecting on the publication, Mark said:
It鈥檚 closer to a manifesto than a monograph, and grew out of a question I kept being asked over the last three years: what is to be done? At present, the window of visibility is open. This is an issue that everyone within the university is compelled to think about and form opinions on. That will not last. It鈥檚 not too late to get this right, but time is short.
The book will be of interest to scholars, students and practitioners seeking to understand and respond to the changing role of AI in higher education.
