Karen Lucas, MUI Director, has contributed to the new Roadmap for Eradicating Poverty which was presented at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Developed under the mandate of former UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights, Olivier de Schutter and New Economies for Eradicating Poverty, the Roadmap was co-constructed by more than 400 contributors from trade unions, social movements, UN agencies, academia, policymaking and civil society across the Global North and Global South.
As an internationally recognised expert on transport poverty, Karen authored a policy proposal on affordable and accessible public transportation. The proposal argues that equitable access to mobility is fundamental to tackling poverty, enabling access to employment, education, healthcare and social participation.
Karen said:
Transport is a fundamental enabler of opportunity. Without affordable and accessible mobility, many people are excluded from the jobs, services and social connections they need to thrive. If we are serious about eradicating poverty, transport equity must be part of the solution.
The Roadmap brings together 80 evidence-based policy measures designed to democratise and decolonise the economy while respecting planetary limits. It challenges the idea that economic growth alone can eradicate poverty and instead sets out practical actions to address poverty and inequality in ways that are socially just, environmentally sustainable and grounded in human rights.
