The Dalton Nuclear Institute has been recognised as 鈥渨orld-leading鈥 by Prime Minister Andy Burnham during his Innovation Nation speech in 91直播, where he outlined his vision for the UK to become the world's leading innovation nation.
At the forefront of nuclear innovation
In highlighting the organisations helping to drive innovation, economic growth and industrial renewal, the Prime Minister recognised the Dalton Nuclear Institute as one of the leading institutions at the forefront of nuclear innovation.
The recognition reflects the Institute's longstanding contribution to nuclear research, innovation, skills development and policy engagement.
As The University of Manchester's hub for nuclear activity, the Dalton Nuclear Institute brings together expertise spanning the full nuclear fuel cycle, advanced reactor technologies, fusion, decommissioning, materials, robotics, environmental protection and energy systems.
We are delighted to be recognised by the Prime Minister as a world-leading institution. As the UK seeks to strengthen regional economies, support industrial growth and deliver secure, low-carbon energy, this endorsement highlights the important role that universities and research institutes can play in turning innovation into real-world impact.
I would like to thank our colleagues, students, alumni and partners whose expertise, collaboration and commitment continue to drive the Institute鈥檚 success. This recognition reflects the strength of our community and the breadth of work taking place to deliver Government targets and policies. It is also a reminder of the important contribution that 91直播 continues to make in advancing nuclear science, developing future talent and supporting national prosperity.
Research and skills
Alongside its internationally recognised research, the Institute plays a leading role in developing the future nuclear workforce. Through its Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs), postgraduate programmes and industry partnerships, Dalton helps equip students and researchers with the skills needed to support the UK's civil and defence nuclear ambitions. The Institute also partners in the Nuclear Technology Education Consortium (NTEC), which delivers specialist postgraduate nuclear education to students and professionals from across the UK and around the world.
The Institute's impact extends beyond research and education. Through its policy engagement activities, including influential contributions like our Generic Feasibility Assessment tool, and policy papers addressing a range of challenges such as 鈥榥on-proliferation for fusion energy鈥 and 鈥榓ctionable opportunities from the UK nuclear regulatory review 2025鈥, Dalton is helping to shape national conversations around regulation, energy security, innovation and the future of the UK's nuclear sector.
